Elder and dependent adult abuse is a serious problem in our community. In 2019, Shasta County Adult Protective Services received 2,489 allegations of abuse including 427 allegations for psychological/mental abuse, 827 financial abuse and 483 for self neglect. Financial abuse cases have increase 63% over the last year.
June is Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month. To raise awareness of the signs of abuse, ShiningCare, Shasta County HHSA, Shasta County District Attorney’s Office, Redding Police Department and PSA2: Area Agency on Aging have come together to form Elder Abuse Prevention Committee. The EAPC has collaborated to produce a week of events that will be both fun and informative for everyone during the month of June each year.
Events include:
- Purple City Family Festival June 10th 6-9 pm. We also have our annual treasure hunt with $5 entry. Winners receive $250 cash and at 9 pm the bridge is lit up purple in awareness of Elder Abuse Awareness. .
- Lunch & Learn-
- Resource Fair during the week day
- Food Drive-All food is donated to the local Meals on Wheels
- Blood Drive
