Elder Abuse Prevention

Elder and dependent adult abuse is a serious problem in our community. In 2019, Shasta County Adult Protective Services received 2,489 allegations of abuse including 427 allegations for psychological/mental abuse, 827 financial abuse and 483 for self neglect.  Financial abuse cases have increase 63% over the last year.

June is Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month. To raise awareness of the signs of abuse, ShiningCare, Shasta County HHSA, Shasta County District Attorney’s Office, Redding Police Department and PSA2: Area Agency on Aging have come together to form Shasta County Elder Abuse Prevention Committee.  The SCEAPC has collaborated to produce a week of events that will be both fun and informative for everyone during the month of June each year. Events include:

  • Resource Fair and Treasure Hunt at the Sundial Bridge-evening event as the bridge is lit up purple.
  • Keeping Our Elders Safe: It Takes A Community Symposium/Webinar

Shiningcare’s Gatekeeper Program: Working to Prevent Elder Abuse

Gatekeeper Program educates businesses and organizations who have regular contact with older adult customers to notice and identify seniors who are potentially at risk.

A major component of the training includes abuse and fraud prevention.

These trained Gatekeepers then connect at-risk elders to the necessary for safety health and the highest level of independence. A large component of the training as well as the support services to the elder provides financial abuse prevention measures.
