Elder and dependent adult abuse is a serious problem in our community. In 2019, Shasta County Adult Protective Services received 2,489 allegations of abuse including 427 allegations for psychological/mental abuse, 827 financial abuse and 483 for self neglect. Financial abuse cases have increase 63% over the last year.
June is Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month. To raise awareness of the signs of abuse, ShiningCare, Shasta County HHSA, Shasta County District Attorney’s Office, Redding Police Department and PSA2: Area Agency on Aging have come together to form Shasta County Elder Abuse Prevention Committee. The SCEAPC has collaborated to produce a week of events that will be both fun and informative for everyone during the month of June each year. Events include:
- Resource Fair and Treasure Hunt at the Sundial Bridge-evening event as the bridge is lit up purple.
- Keeping Our Elders Safe: It Takes A Community Symposium/Webinar
- Food Drive-All food is donated to the local Meals on Wheels
- Blood Drive
